  • Intuitive Eating is a self-care eating framework, which integrates instinct, emotion, and rational thought and was created by two dietitians, Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch in 1995. Intuitive Eating is a weight-inclusive, evidence-based model with a validated assessment scale and over 100 studies to date.

It’s a personal and dynamic process, which includes 10 principles:

    Reject the Diet Mentality

    Honor Your Hunger

    Make Peace with Food

    Challenge the Food Police

    Discover the Satisfaction Factor

    Feel Your Fullness

Cope with Your Emotions with Kindness

    Respect Your Body

    Movement—Feel the Difference

Honour Your Health - Gentle Nutrition

The principles work in two key ways:

By helping you cultivate attunement to the physical sensations that arise from within your body to get both your biological and psychological needs met and

Removing the internal and external obstacles and disruptors to attunement, which usually come from the mind and the wider environment in the form of rules, beliefs, and thoughts.

The process of Intuitive Eating is a practice which honours both physical and mental health in a holistic way. It focuses on paying attention - to internal and external cues. Intuitive Eating is aligned with Health at Every Size®, because the pursuit of intentional weight loss is a failed paradigm, which creates health problems: including weight stigma, weight cycling, and eating disorders. All bodies deserve dignity and respect.

During coaching sessions, the practitioner guides the client through the principles in a flexible and client-led way, while at all times honouring the client as the expert of themselves.

When working together you (the client) understand and agree to the following –

I will not receive any diet or meal plans.

Intuitive Eating is not about weight-loss and dieting and I do not expect my counsellor to give me any weight-loss advice.

I will not be weighed during my sessions.

I will receive tools and develop skills to support me in putting the principles of intuitive eating into practice and it is my responsibility to use them.

I am responsible for contacting my GP about any health concerns.

I give permission for my counsellor to contact my GP regarding any agreed aspects of my case if necessary.

If I am receiving treatment from my GP, or any other medical provider, I should tell him/her about my intuitive eating counselling. My counsellor will be happy to liaise with anyone from my medical team if I wish for them to do so.

It is important that I tell my counsellor about any medical diagnoses I have, and/or any medication or supplements I am taking.

If I am unclear about anything that was discussed in session, I can contact my counsellor for clarification via email.

Recording consultations using any form of electronic media is not allowed without the written permission of both me and my counsellor.

I understand the above and agree that our professional relationship will be based on the content of this document. I understand that that all the information my counsellor and I share during this professional relationship is confidential and to the best of both our knowledge, true and correct.

On sharing this form, your counsellor adheres to these Terms of Engagement.

On accepting this form you are agreeing to the same Terms of Engagement.

Please contact your counsellor if you have any questions or concerns about this.

Children and young people - Consent

We will only advise or consult with clients under sixteen years of age with the explicit permission from the parent or guardian. Clients aged 14-16 years will be able to choose whether they would like their parent or guardian present during consultations. It is often easier to build a trusting practitioner-client relationship when matters can be discussed privately. However, the parent or guardian will be informed about anything that warrants their attention or a medical intervention.

For any questions please email hello@elalawnutrition.co.uk
